A Short History of Valentine's Day
There are a variety of stories or legends surrounding Valentine's Day and its origins, whether Pagan or Christian. One of the most well known is that of a Christian named Valentine who was imprisoned by the Romans and sent a love letter to a young girl, who was possibly the jailor's daughter who would visit him. The letter was sent before he was executed and signed From Your Valentine.
Many of the other stories revolve around un-requited love which have led to romantic legends and a popular day for showing love in our modern lives.
According to figures on Statista, £391 million was spent on Valentine's Day gifts in 2019, split over categories such as going out for dinner, clothing and chocolates.
